OVERWEIGHT people who avoid fats could be more likely to eat more and gain weight, not lose it, researchers claim. David Ludwig and his colleagues at the Children’s Hospital and Tufts University in Boston fed 12 obese teenagers test meals, then let them eat whenever they felt hungry over the next five hours. Children who had been given a high-starch meal later took in 81 per cent more energy over this period than those who initially ate a meal that was higher in fat (Pediatrics, online edition, vol 103, e26). Ludwig says the rapid rise in blood glucose from the starchy meals caused insulin levels to surge, storing away the meal’s energy faster. “The body runs low on fuel and you get hungry,” he says. The findings may help to explain why so few French people are overweight, despite their high-fat diets,
